The Johnny Cycle

The Johnny Cycle Part 3: THE LIVING (2017)
Created by The Speakeasy Society
Lead Writer and Composer - Chris Porter
Video by Christopher Dreisbach

Set amongst the marble hallways of the Mountain View Mausoleum in Altadena, California, the stunning conclusion to The Speakeasy Society’s critically-acclaimed The Johnny Cycle, based on Dalton Trumbo’s Johnny Got His Gun, immerses audiences in the mind of an injured soldier as his perception of reality blends with dreams, memories, and events from his author’s life. Johnny may speak for the dead, but who will listen?

“…an experience that honors the lives of the dead, and their value within the whole of existence.”
Doron Kipper, No Proscenium

Ripped from the pages of the Frank L. Baum’s “Land of OZ” novels, The Speakeasy Society’s episodic and immersive retelling throws audiences into the middle of an alternate reality game (ARG) inspired experience that takes place in real time and evolves according to audiences' responses. The story spans ten chapters and productions have been ongoing from 2016 through 2019.

“The Speakeasy Society […] transports us to a magical place that I, along with many others, can’t get enough of.”

It's 1926, and Ramon Navarro is hosting the must-attend event of the season to welcome F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald to Hollywood. The guest list is a who’s who of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and your name is at the top of the list! Break out your finest for an evening of song, dance, and salacious secrets in this immersive theatrical event. Hold on as these eccentric characters spiral out of control revealing their desires for wealth, fame...and each other.

“The actors, as usual with Speakeasy Society shows, were great in their one-on-one scenes, but also shone in their song and dance numbers as their personalities and grudges shimmered darkly beneath their fancy clothes.”
- Juliet Bennett Rylah, No Proscenium
